Server Fails, Pinterest Fails and The Week That Kicked My Butt

i hate everyone

I don’t have anything pretty to share today except maybe that pillow up there. No pretty crafts, no recipes (not for lack of trying) and no good ideas because last week kicked my butt.

First, there was the Bluehost crash that knocked my blog down for 3 days over Thanksgiving and Black Friday. I don’t make a lot of money from affiliates yet, but they pretty much guaranteed that I didn’t make anything. So thanks for that. The five separate times I got an online chat with them, they were largely unhelpful. “It’s a server issue”. Wow. I don’t speak tech at all but even I knew that. Thanks so much for that, Captain Obvious.

Thanks, Captain Obvious!

To be completely honest, until last week I thought a server was someone who brought me food and such in restaurants. True story. But I did know what it was by the time I got the chat people on-line. So there, chat people. Don’t talk down to me.

I finally got a hold of someone helpful on their site at the end of the third day who was able to identify that the crash had been resolved the day before but one of my plug ins was causing problems. Well, bless her heart! She finally helped me put my site back together. She is pretty much the only reason that I’m still with Bluehost.

Then there’s the boys. Sometimes I can’t tell the difference between normal awful 3 year old behavior and FASD. Either way, I’m worn out. Let’s just say that I’m grateful to be living in Canada because the worst tantrums from my youngest happened happened on Thursday on the way to daycare. Canada had Thanksgiving in October so daycare was open. Can I get an Amen for good daycare? I should probably mention that the behaviors weren’t any better back then and we actually cancelled Thanksgiving? We’re 0 and 2 over here.

pinterest fail

And, finally….Food Bloggers! What the hell? I tried three super popular food blogger recipes from Pinterest (I’m not going to name and shame anyone….that’s just not nice) last week. Every single one was a total disaster. Can I just say that for those folks that think that blogging is all about beautiful photos, it’s not. The recipe needs to work. I probably threw out at least $50 worth of food last week which is not cool.

The first was a creamy chicken and wild rice soup that looked amazing but had a glue like texture and tasted like, well, glue. Unseasoned glue. I couldn’t season it enough to get it to taste like anything. We threw out the entire 10 servings and had PB&J.

The second was another slow cooker pork chop recipe that tasted like vinegar. Threw that out, too. We had Kraft Mac & Cheese.

The final mess was a chicken corn chowder done in the slow cooker. I questioned the wisdom of adding milk at the beginning of a 7 hour cooking process but I thought, “Hey, she’s an expert. She knows what she’s doing.”

Yah. About that. She takes great photos but the food was inedible. The milk curdled and the soup tasted like paint. And can I just say this is the second recipe in a row that I’ve tried from her super popular site that tasted like crap. But those photos were so tempting. I gave up, tossed yet another meal in the garbage, and ate the pan of cornbread for supper (my own recipe so I know it works). The boys had more PB&J.

I don’t mean to keep picking on bloggers, but seriously…. get it together, people. Professional looking photos are great. Good for you. Maybe start a food photography blog or something without pretending that the recipe is anything you’ve personally made and is edible. Because good pics don’t replace good food.

I know that food photos are styled and, in fact, I’m pretty sure the before photos of the chowder recipe really were “before”.  As in, she took pictures of the soup with raw ingredients. There’s no way that food holds up like that after 8 hours in a slow cooker. I get it….everyone wants gorgeous tempting photos but the recipe needs to actually be edible.

But this….? I followed the recipe exactly and I got this hot curdled mess. That tasted like sour milk. Mmmmm….tasty.

chowder fail

Apologies for the tone of my rant….. I’m just a bit hangry (anger caused from hunger) and kind of broke having spent all of our grocery money on beautifully photographed but inedible meals this week. #sorrynotsorry

Also, I’m pretty sure I’d feel a lot better if someone got me that pillow for Christmas! Just saying 😉

  1. Jenna,
This is cracking me up! It sounds about like my week as well. I was hurt by the bluehost crash too. grrr! But thank you for putting a smile on my face. Here is to a better week!
    Much Love,
    Erica from Designing Vibes

    • I honestly don’t know why I bother, Karen. It’s not like the boys actually want anything I’ve made anyway lol. Things are much better around here this week. Hope you’re having a good one, too.

  2. Ya see? Now this is why I’m not a blogger.I just stalk But I feel so bad for you! And I, too, love that pillow!!! Where did you see it?

  3. Hey Dona! If I didn’t normally love blogging so much, I would have trashed it all last week. That pillow is from If you click the pillow, it should link directly to the site. I’m debating trying to make one but don’t want to push my luck, lol. Have a lovely week 🙂

  4. First of all, that pillow is my favorite thing ever. I love it so much! I think I need one. Second – yeah the bluehost thing was super annoying. And third – your rant about food bloggers actually makes me feel a little better about life (although I still hate pants). I’m a semi-food-blogger (if there is such a thing), and I only post the recipes I actually eat and feed my family in my everyday life. Sometimes I feel bad because my photography isn’t as stellar as some of the really popular food blogs, but you gave me a reality check that it doesn’t matter if the photography is gorgeous if the food is just plain BAD. (On a side note, I’d love to know which chicken rice soup recipe to avoid because I know pinned one or two that looked really good…maybe I’ll just avoid making either one!)

  5. Does that really happen, that the recipies that have me drooling are all bogus?? Well, everything that I’ve ever tried has worked out just fine, no paste for dinner. If you want, I’ll give you my go to blogger for recipes. But you have to give me the pillow!

  6. Mummmm, paint soup, sounds good!! Next week will be better. It has to be!
I once tried a delicious looking brownie in a mug recipe from pinterest, it looked SO good, it smelt SO good, we dived in with our spoons and it tasted SO bad! We tipped in out into a bowl, poured syrup all over it, dolloped on icecream and it was just about edible. Then I deleted the pin!

  7. Jenna, I was wigging out, I couldn’t get on your site on my phone for days. I was in withdrawal! I could get there on my computer, just not my phone, which is where I read most of my blogging. Especially as I lie in a bubblebath, the only quiet I seem to get at times! LOL I’m so happy that you got it figured out, and I think I’m really digging the look of your theme. It’s streamlined and I love the colors. Now, the Pinterest recipes, that stinks! This is exactly why I started the Pinterest Recipe Review, I got too many bad recipes and I hate wasting food, and the money. I mourn! I thought of you as I made chicken corn chowder last night, I have some left-overs, wanna come for lunch tomorrow? xx

  8. No need to apologize for ranting in posts. It just shows there is an actually human being involved with the blog instead of a perfect robot, such as a robot who takes beautiful photos of food not design for human consumption. 🙂

  9. I’ve noticed your site was down for a bit. Glad the problem is sorted:)
    Hope your boys are better!
And inedible food loooool- you cracked me up. Sorry you were hungry though. And thanks for the warning-I’ll stick with my chocolate then;)

  10. Jenna, how did I know before I even clicked on the thumbnail in my linkup, that this was you…lol! As a seriously techno deficient person…really…I don’t know how I manage to blog half the time…I would be freaking out majorly at your server issues. My sympathies! As for food bloggers, yeah, well. I hear you. I hope today is better. There’s always chocolate you know. I think it has all five food groups. That’s what I tell myself anyway. Thanks for sharing at Five Star Frou-Frou. Mimi xxx

  11. Hi, Jenna ~ I’m sorry your week stunk! I must have that pillow. It’s perfect! Thanks for sharing with us at the Merry Monday Link Party. Hope to see you again on Sunday!

  12. I had a server error last weekend. They fixed it within 20 minutes of me submitting a request. But I’d already spent all day trying various things myself… Oh and food bloggers? Oy vay… I share recipes occasionally. Try to make the photos look decent. But if tastes like crap, I don’t share. And I’ve stopped worrying so much about perfection in the photo. I posted a pic of my favorite chili and *allowed* a big slop mess in the background lol… Because I’m real. #SundayBlogHop
