I don’t have anything pretty to share today except maybe that pillow up there. No pretty crafts, no recipes (not for lack of trying) and no good ideas because last week kicked my butt.
First, there was the Bluehost crash that knocked my blog down for 3 days over Thanksgiving and Black Friday. I don’t make a lot of money from affiliates yet, but they pretty much guaranteed that I didn’t make anything. So thanks for that. The five separate times I got an online chat with them, they were largely unhelpful. “It’s a server issue”. Wow. I don’t speak tech at all but even I knew that. Thanks so much for that, Captain Obvious.
To be completely honest, until last week I thought a server was someone who brought me food and such in restaurants. True story. But I did know what it was by the time I got the chat people on-line. So there, chat people. Don’t talk down to me.
I finally got a hold of someone helpful on their site at the end of the third day who was able to identify that the crash had been resolved the day before but one of my plug ins was causing problems. Well, bless her heart! She finally helped me put my site back together. She is pretty much the only reason that I’m still with Bluehost.
Then there’s the boys. Sometimes I can’t tell the difference between normal awful 3 year old behavior and FASD. Either way, I’m worn out. Let’s just say that I’m grateful to be living in Canada because the worst tantrums from my youngest happened happened on Thursday on the way to daycare. Canada had Thanksgiving in October so daycare was open. Can I get an Amen for good daycare? I should probably mention that the behaviors weren’t any better back then and we actually cancelled Thanksgiving? We’re 0 and 2 over here.
And, finally….Food Bloggers! What the hell? I tried three super popular food blogger recipes from Pinterest (I’m not going to name and shame anyone….that’s just not nice) last week. Every single one was a total disaster. Can I just say that for those folks that think that blogging is all about beautiful photos, it’s not. The recipe needs to work. I probably threw out at least $50 worth of food last week which is not cool.
The first was a creamy chicken and wild rice soup that looked amazing but had a glue like texture and tasted like, well, glue. Unseasoned glue. I couldn’t season it enough to get it to taste like anything. We threw out the entire 10 servings and had PB&J.
The second was another slow cooker pork chop recipe that tasted like vinegar. Threw that out, too. We had Kraft Mac & Cheese.
The final mess was a chicken corn chowder done in the slow cooker. I questioned the wisdom of adding milk at the beginning of a 7 hour cooking process but I thought, “Hey, she’s an expert. She knows what she’s doing.”
Yah. About that. She takes great photos but the food was inedible. The milk curdled and the soup tasted like paint. And can I just say this is the second recipe in a row that I’ve tried from her super popular site that tasted like crap. But those photos were so tempting. I gave up, tossed yet another meal in the garbage, and ate the pan of cornbread for supper (my own recipe so I know it works). The boys had more PB&J.
I don’t mean to keep picking on bloggers, but seriously…. get it together, people. Professional looking photos are great. Good for you. Maybe start a food photography blog or something without pretending that the recipe is anything you’ve personally made and is edible. Because good pics don’t replace good food.
I know that food photos are styled and, in fact, I’m pretty sure the before photos of the chowder recipe really were “before”. As in, she took pictures of the soup with raw ingredients. There’s no way that food holds up like that after 8 hours in a slow cooker. I get it….everyone wants gorgeous tempting photos but the recipe needs to actually be edible.
But this….? I followed the recipe exactly and I got this hot curdled mess. That tasted like sour milk. Mmmmm….tasty.
Apologies for the tone of my rant….. I’m just a bit hangry (anger caused from hunger) and kind of broke having spent all of our grocery money on beautifully photographed but inedible meals this week. #sorrynotsorry
Also, I’m pretty sure I’d feel a lot better if someone got me that pillow for Christmas! Just saying 😉
