Best of the Weekend and Features – Oct 30

Best of the Weekend Link Party October 2, 2015

Welcome to our Best of the Weekend party! Halloween is tomorrow and the boys are beyond excited. This will be there first year trick or treating and we’re all wound up over here. Last year we were set to go but they refused to go out. They just wanted to wear their costumes and give out candy. Since it was pouring rain, I was just fine with that. I’m pretty sure that nothing will be stopping them tomorrow. Since this is our last party before Halloween, all of my features this week are Halloween themed.

Our weekly party is hosted by five bloggers which means your posts are seen on all five of our blogs. We’d love if you would follow us on social media in some way and hope you’ll add us to your party page.

Have y’all caught on to the the coloring books for grown ups? I bought my first one this week from the drug store, thinking this would help relax me before bed. I love it! Seriously the most relaxing thing I’ve done in a long time. And it seems like I’m not alone since these pretty coloring pages for adults from Angie at the Country Chic Cottage were our most clicked link last week.

15 DIY Halloween Projects

UPDATE: In response to the emails I’ve received from folks who love these ideas but don’t want to DIY, I’ve added links to similar items that you can purchase directly. I get it. I’m kind of over the DIY thing at the moment, too, so many thanks to my amazing readers for pulling the trigger to add some shopping links. Some of these links are affiliate links which means, I get a small commission if you click and purchase which my family is uber grateful for! The commission doesn’t affect your cost at all and I get to keep buying peanut butter for the kid that won’t eat anything else. xoxo

If you’re a regular around here, you know I post on average around three times a week and never two or three days in a row. But this is a special week. First, it’s Halloween next weekend and I thought I’d share some last minute Halloween ideas with everyone (including yesterday’s Candy Corn Rice Krispie Treats….which I cannot. stop. eating.) And secondly, I’ve been invited to co-host a mid-week link party with Robin at Fluster Buster at the Creative Muster Party Tomorrow night. Mucho fun! Who says you can’t have two parties in a week?

In the meantime, there’s less than a week until Halloween so if you’re still trying to come up with some last minute ideas, here are 15 great Halloween Projects to take a peak at.

Feeling inspired yet? Go on…whip out that glue gun and a bag of Halloween candy (you know….for medicinal purposes since you’ll need the energy and all) and get crafting 🙂

Or even better. Just go shopping. From your sofa.

Candy Corn Rice Krispie Treats

Candy Corn Rice Krispie Treats. For sharing. Or not

Rice Krispie Treats (or Rice Krispie Squares as they’re called in Canada) are probably my favorite dessert ever. Like I can make a pan and eat all but two pieces. Because it would probably be completely bad parenting if I didn’t give the boys one piece.  And it would also be bad parenting if they ate more than one piece because the sugar is bad for them and all that. I’m a giver that way. This year I’m totally up for “Mother of the Year”. And also  the “Needs Fatter Fat Pants Award”.

Candy corn is totally one of my favorite candies, too. One time a friend brought me some Easter colored candy corn (who knew that even existed???) and I ate my way through the entire bag into a candy corn induced state of delirium. Which I then proceeded to wash down with a slug of wine….Riesling ,of course, since it paired well with the sweet candy corn. I was pretty pleased with myself. Until my boyfriend at the time told me he thought the way I inhaled that candy corn was “disgusting”. And just like that, he wasn’t my boyfriend any longer.

Candy Corn Rice Krispie Treats. None for you, ex-boyfriend.

Now that I’ve over-shared, let me tell you about the day my two favorite sweet things got married. I was reminiscing about that fine candy corn day when I realized it was actually fall and candy corn would be in season again. Which led me to thinking about how nice it would be if I introduced my two besties and they became a thing. Candy Corn Rice Krispie Treats. For real, y’all. This really is the kind of stuff I think about. #notdeep

(Look…. I’m sure it’s been done before but in this case, I simply chose not to look on Pinterest because I wanted to feel like I’d inventing something wonderful. So I did.)

I even shared these with Liam who was home from preschool because he needed to buy a fire fighter hat earlier that morning. He was less impressed that I made him eat his lunch before the Rice Krispie Treat was served. Probably because those treats were my lunch. My house, my rules.

Sometimes you just need to buy yourself a fire fighter hat and move on.

Happy wedding day to candy corn and Rice Krispie Treats. A very fine thing.

Glam Painted Pumpkins

Fall is kind of a struggle for me. I love to change thing up to reflect the seasons but I loathe fall colors. It’s probably a side effect of being a child in the seventies. Anything brown or orange gives me an earth tone hangover. Ick. I’ve tried adding purples and doing neutrals. Those were okay but this year I finally gave up the struggle to fit in and decided to decorate for fall in a way that reflected colors that I actually like. That’s right….pink, grey, navy, and gold glitter. Screw you, fall. You’re not the boss of me.

Glam painted pumpkins. Pink, navy, gold, and grey.

Let’s start with this big guy. He got a coat of Dior Grey since I have tons of it leftover from our front foyer and my grey and white dresser makeover.

Once big grey was dry, I spray painted some tacks gold and added the lettering. Because “boo” is cool and tacks are cool and grey and gold are too groovy not to hang out together.

Gold spray painted tacks.

And then along came the navy pumpkin(s). Because “Me wuv navy so so much” as Aiden would say in his charming three year old lisp. And because navy hearts gold, my navy pumpkins got some gold dots (stickers!), gold stems, and sassy little gold bows.

Oh, and let’s not forget this glam pumpkin from a couple of years ago. She was cream with black glittery dots. Now she’s white with pretty pink dots. Just because. That was an easy up-cycle with some white and pink craft paint…I just went over the original design with the pink paint and cuteness was re-born.

And if you’re going to glam up some pumpkins, there had better be something gold in there. Gold spray paint and pink polka dots took this mini pumpkin to the next level.

The rest of the pumpkins were given some navy or gray paint and are glamming up the dining table. All of the pumpkins have sexy gold glittery stems. Because nothing says fall like gold glitter. Actually, maybe I made that up but I don’t care.

All together we have two large and two small real pumpkins and the rest are plastic or foam from Michael’s and the dollar store. Once they’d all been painted and glittered, there wasn’t a scrap of orange in sight. Because that’s how we roll…pumpkin style.

15 Kid Friendly No-Carve Halloween Pumpkins

Halloween is fun but sometimes it’s a bit scary for younger children. The boys have big imaginations and Aiden, particularly, gets the scaries easily. I sat down with my little fellows this week to get ideas for our Halloween decorating and we had a great time looking at some kid friendly pumpkins. Today we’re sharing our 15 favorite ideas with all of you.
